Nostalgia... =D
However, you really didn't even need to merchant on RS. Although it did help (I remember merchanting natures for 8 hours a day for a few weeks to earn like a mil a day...), a major key to doing well was also hording rares and playing at the beginning of the game when all the rares were cheap.
Unfortunately, this is a fact that is starting to relate to GWs more and more by the day. RS's party hats and masks have turned into HoDs and nerfed farming golds that were once looted by the hundreds of griffons and smite crawlers. Now, breaking into the economy is just like buying your first Phat--it's pretty much near impossible, without ebaying. Ironically, Anet's attempts to curb ebaying have led to even more reason to buy gold on the web.

Yes, there are tons of threads about this very idea. I think Anet has heard the call. I don't know why they never put an auction house in Prophecies, but Factions will have an auction house. I think Factions will correct a lot of things that went wrong in Prophecies.
Until then just spread the word about the gwguru's ebay style auction. I just tell ppl about the auction here, and I usually give out the url for the auctions. Even if only one person start using the auctions here it's one less person in LA spamming WTS Uber 1337 vampiric sword of doomy mcdoom doom, 500k
And it's Arenanet. I always thought it was Area net which makes more sense but...

I've given up on making money. The novelty of farming the same things over and over again has lost it's appeal. I'd rather spend my time exploring new areas and being challenged by newer, harder monsters. I guess as someone who has yet to complete the game, visit UW/FOW/SF - I still have plenty of things to keep me occupied.

Very true. Hence my whining.
1) Farming = grind. Boring
2) Trading = slow. Boring. Out-witting the newbies? I don't like it.
3) Running = Hard for non-primary warriors and you tend to ruin the game for those you run ("lvl 10 in Thunderhead LFG") AND ruin the lower lvl Arena's too.
4) eBay = Against the rules and rather pathetic, imo.
There is 5): winning HoH often. That is not a realistic option for most players, though. (The number of people able to do that is limited: only 8 people can do that at any one moment).
My wish:
1. that quests (such as the harder quests like the titan quests) would yield more gold (perhaps by adding a gold reward)
2. That people here would stop pointing out that you do not NEED gold.
|
If the quests in FoW would yield gold instead of useless xp there would be no problem obtaining obsidian armor (And dont come with that crap it would eb too easy then it still would take long but not forever).

I concur in FoW and Underworld, XP is useless, completing missions is only for DP reduction and personal challange enjoyment.

Spend some time in Sorrows Furnace, simple enough with the drops, the chests and the greens, although there are some real garbage greens.
btw- Anet have stated that there will be improvements to the trade system - not that there will be a auction house.

I didnt see him say he sold it this second? Sup vig used to be that high remember. Forge armor is cheap so i dont see the point of all this crying. You dont have to buy 15k or Fissure, or a Fellblade(Chaos also). People buy gold off E-bay to get not your everyday items. You want a 15^50 sword, theres a req. 9 one in the forge for 5k and materials, also a axe. E-bay doesnt change anything except for rune prices. Mateials can easily be farmed w/o any nerf. Greens are cheap also, remember when 30 HP shields went for tons of gold. Now you can get one for 75k, it also has another mod OMG. The only reason i have 2 sets of fissure is because my storage ran out lol. Also i got lucky when first started the game.

/Sarcasm on
I think according to ANet you not suppose to have to make money, cause you see after you unlocked all the things you need for PvP there no real reason to have money at all since GW end game is PvP.
/Sarcasm off
whatever forms of farming you can afford the time to do will generally yield some gold just not as profitable as its used to with lesser options than before.

Personal enjoyment is useless? Nice philosophy there.
Making money to have what you want is easy... fow/uw provides. Making enough to be obscenely rich needs luck. Focus on just having enough to not run out first, and maybe you'll get lucky in the meantime..

For pve players it's nice to get some special skin armor and weapons, even though they won't make you any better. The fact is this stuff costs a lot, otherwise everybody would have it. I think this is nothing special and it's just the way things go in life.
As the game is out for about a year now, more pve players got to the point where they've beaten the game and look for other goals, like fow armor for example. I think Anet doesn't want to loose these veterans as they help sell the game and expansion. So they made nerfs on several aspects of the game to slow down the process and keep players hooked. Which is in my opinion just good marketing.
This is in contradiction with Anet's struggle to fight ebay sellers though. Which I think is not the only way but one of the fastest ways to achieve gold if you have the cash. So basically this is Anet's prob, not ours. This is just the law of cause and effect and like with everything, there are two sides of the coin.
I disagree the endgame is about pvp only. Anet wants to attract both pve and pvp players or the combo of them. They could just have left the whole pve campaign and UW and stuff out and save a lot on development costs if that was their goal. Both pve and pvp are equally importent to them as they'll cover both segments of the market this way which results in more sales.
There are 3 types of players when it comes to gathering gold: Those who have lots of time to farm and play, those who have less time but real cash to buy gold and those who both have time and cash. The best position is the latter one ofcourse as you can do whatever you like to in that case. Time is money and money is time. Therefore I find it utterly bull when someone claims it's not fair to buy ebay gold. It has nothing to do with fairplay. It has all to do with the means available to get what you want, for some this is time for others it's cash and for some it's both.
